The Sambuca di Sicilia Municipality has long developed policies geared toward sustainable development.

In 2013, in fact, the municipality joined the Covenant of Mayors, a European initiative to actively involve cities in the different states of the Union in the path toward energy and environmental sustainability. This was immediately followed by the implementation and concrete implementation of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP).

Despite its modest size, the municipality also plays a significant role in the fight against climate change. The Municipal Administration, being the administrative level closest to the citizens, addresses the energy challenge by promoting the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. To this end, in fact, it has committed to reducing emissions by 20 percent, taking the lead in implementing smart energy policies and applying good practices, starting with its own buildings.

Due to the amount of environmental policies adopted, Sambuca was awarded the National Green Flag Award 2021 by the Italian Confederation of Farmers. In addition, in the same year it was awarded the Comune Riciclone Award as one of the municipalities in southern Italy with the highest percentage of separate waste collection.
